Moscow, Apr 12 (Sputnik) Two Cuban doctors were abducted in northeastern Kenya on the border with Somalia by unidentified gunmen on Friday while they were being escorted by police to work, the Kenyan National Police Service said, adding that one of the police officers was shot dead during the attack.

The incident occurred in Mandera town at around 9:00 a.m. local time (06:00 GMT). The group, comprising the two medics and two police officers, was heading to one of local hospitals when their vehicle was blocked by two Toyota cars.

"Unfortunately, the APS [Administration Police Service] officer was shot at and fatally wounded. The criminals commandeered the car and occupants across the border to Somalia. So far, the County Government vehicle has been recovered and the driver is being held for interrogation," the National Police Service-Kenya tweeted.

The police added that the rescue operation to recover the abducted Cuban nationals was underway.

"All security agencies have been mobilized to pursue the criminals and rescue the victims. We urge members of the public to remain calm and avoid speculations as security agencies pursue the criminals," the police said.

Media reports indicate that the attack could have been committed by Al-Shabab terrorists, who emerged in Somalia and have sworn allegiance to al-Qaeda terrorist organization (banned in Russia).
