Train derailment leaves 2 dead in Australia
Sydney/UNI: Two people were killed and 11 injured when a train carrying 153 passengers derailed near a town north of Melbourne, officials said on Friday.
The crash occurred near Wallan between Sydney and Melbourne on Thursday night.
The male driver 54, and his female co-pilot, 49, died in the crash, police said.
As many as five carriages as well as the locomotive had come off the tracks, they further said.
"It is a tragedy that unfortunately the pilot and the driver were killed in the incident, but I am amazed that there weren't more passengers at least injured or worse than what they were," Inspector Peter Koger said as quoted by BBC.
The cause of the incident was yet to be known.
An investigation was underway, police added.
Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack condoled the incident saying "Our hearts and thoughts go out to the families of those who have lost their lives".
The train is the main long-distance service between Sydney and Melbourne, and runs along tracks operated by the federal government.
