Protests demanding release of Editor-in-Chief of Geo and Jang Group Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman continue in Pakistan

Rawalpindi: Protesting against the arrest of  Editor-in-Chief of Geo and Jang Group Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman and on the curbs on the media, workers of Geo and Jang Group along with the Pakistan Federal Unions of Journalists, representatives of the civil society and political parties  demonstrated across Pakistan on Monday.

The countrywide protest of workers of Geo and Jang Group completed 87th day on Monday against the illegal arrest of  Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman.

The protesters chanted slogans for the release of  Rahman and condemned the curbs on the freedom of media. They also condemned the conspiracies to close down the Geo and Jang Group, reported The News International.

Addressing the protest outside the offices of Jang and The News at Murree Road in Rawalpindi, speakers called for release of Rahman and vowed to continue their protest till he was released, reported the Pakistan-based newspaper.

Editor of The News Aamir Ghauri said: “We hoped that the courts will provide justice on June 11 like the British courts."

Speakers, including Secretary General PFUJ Nasir Zaidi, Chairman Editorial Committee Jang Rawalpindi Hanif Khalid, chairman Joint Action Committee of workers of Geo and Jang group Islamabad and President Jang Workers Union Nasir Chisti, Professor Saaed, and others demanded for the quick release of Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman.

Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman was arrested on 12 March by the NAB in Pakistan in a case concerning a property transaction that dates back 34 years to 1986.
