Pakistan's Law Minister quits, nation reaches an agreement with hardliners
Islamabad, Nov 27 (IBNS): Islamabad slowly crawled back to normalcy as protesters finally decided to lift the sit-in following the resignation of Pakistani Law Minister Zahid Hamid, reports said.
However, an official declaration about the status of the demonstrations will be made by the leaders later today.
The protest, which went for nearly 19 days, witnessed at least half a dozen deaths and more than hundred injuries.
The agitators, who demanded the resignation of Hamid, camped at the Faizabad Interchange, the main gateway between Rawalpindi and Pakistan's capital Islamabad.
Local media quoted the lawmaker as saying, "I made the decision to resign in a personal capacity."
The agitators mainly belonged to Islamist parties, namely Tehreek-i-Khatm-i-Nabuwwat, Tehreek-i-Labaik Ya Rasool Allah (TLY) and the Sunni Tehreek Pakistan (ST), Dawn News reported.
The demonstrations were initiated over a hastily-abandoned amendment to the oath that election candidates must swear.
Agitators had linked it to blasphemy.
