Pakistan: Blast rocks Peshawar madressah, 7 killed

Peshawar: A blast rocked Jamia Zuberia madressah in Peshawar's Dir Colony of Pakistan which left at least seven people killed, media reports said.

The blast left 110 people injured.

According to Lady Reading Hospital spokesperson Mohammad Asim, four of the deceased were students between the ages of 20 to 25, reports Dawn News.

Mohammad Ali Gandapur, another senior police official, confirmed the details.

He told the newspaper two teachers were among the wounded.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Mansoor Aman confirmed the explosion, saying that initial reports suggest an improvised explosive device (IED) was used in the explosion.

"Five kgs of explosives were used in the blast," Mansoor Aman told Dawn News.

Police rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area.

No group claimed responsibility for the incident.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Minister Taimur Saleem Jhagra visited the spot after the accident.

He tweeted: "Just back from a quick visit to Lady Reading Hospital, following the blast at a Madrassa in Dir Colony, Peshawar. Talked to the Chief Secretary, CCPO and the DC, as well as hospital administration. LRH has received 70 injured, with 7 patients dead on arrival."

PM Imran Khan said he was deeply saddened by the 'terrorist attack'.

"Deeply saddened by terrorist attack on madrassah in Peshawar. My condolences go to the victims families & prayers for early recovery of the injured. I want to assure my nation we will ensure the terrorists responsible for this cowardly barbaric attack are brought to justice asap," Khan tweeted.
