New York, Mar 14 (IBNS): As a huge winter storm threatening to turn into a blizzard rolls into northeast United States (US), states of New York and New Jersey have declared an emergency, according to media reports on Tuesday.

Flights have been cancelled and schools shut, local reports said.

Tweeted Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo on Monday, "In response to #blizzard2017, we are announcing a state of emergency statewide starting at midnight tonight."

"There will be extensive flight cancellations on Tuesday at LGA and JFK; travelers should check with their carriers, " he said in another tweet.

The Mayor also warned that New Yorkers should exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel and pay close attention to winter storm advisories.

Bad weather has led to German Chancellor Angela Merkel postpone her trip to Washington to meet President Trump, according to media reports.
