Nepal power crisis: India approves 654 MW electricity export amid massive flood damage
The Indian Ministry of Power has approved the export of electricity to Nepal for 18 hours a day, from midnight to 6 pm, between September 13 and December 31.
According to a government statement, approval has been granted for the export of up to 600 MW through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit line and up to 54 MW through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit line.
“The quantum of power to be exported from January 2027 will be reviewed in December 2026,” the statement said.
Recent floods have caused significant damage to hydropower infrastructure in Nepal, reducing the country’s domestic power generation capacity and creating an additional requirement for electricity.
The Indian government said the approval would help Nepal meet its power requirements during the difficult period and further strengthen the close and longstanding energy cooperation between the two countries.
“India remains committed to supporting Nepal and strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector,” the government said.
Meanwhile, a deadly disaster triggered by the collapse of a glacier has reportedly killed nearly 1,400 people in Nepal and Tibet, while more than 5,000 people remain missing.
