Massive blast in Kabul, at least 17 killed, 110 injured

Kabul, Jan 27 (IBNS) : A massive explosion  killed and wounded scores of people at a police checkpoint in the Afghan capital Kabul on Saturday, media reports said.

The blast took place close to the old compound of the ministry of interior of Afghanistan after a bomb hidden in an ambulance went off.

Security sources confirmed the blast has taken place in the vicinity of Sedarat area and close to the old compound of the ministry of interior.

A spokesperson from the public health ministry said 17 people had been killed and at least 110 wounded in the blast, which came a week after a deadly attack on the Intercontinental Hotel in the city.

Local Khaama Press has quoted a security official as saying that the  the blast has likely left around 20 people dead and over 100 others wounded.

The Taliban group claimed responsibility for the attack, according to Iran’s Press TV.

Reports said the ambulance approached the checkpoint, close to an office of the High Peace Council and several foreign embassies, and blew up.
