Malaysia detains nine terror suspects amid rising threat of foreign militants

Moscow, Mar 10 (Sputnik) The Malaysian police have detained nine terrorist suspects, including seven foreigners, during raids across the country, local media reported on Sunday, citing Inspector General Mohamad Fuzi bin Harun.

According to the Channel News Asia broadcaster, the suspects — two Malaysians, six Egyptians and a Tunisian — were detained in Klang Valley and the eastern state of Sarawak between February 2 and February 9.

A 21-year-old Egyptian and a 22-year-old Tunisian are suspected to be members of the Tunisian branch of Ansar al-Sharia, which is designated by the United Nations as a terrorist organization. As for the other suspects, five Egyptians are reported to be directly linked to the Muslim Brotherhood (a terrorist organization, outlawed in Russia and Syria), while two Malaysian detainees are charged with aiding foreign terrorists.

The seven foreigners were deported on March 5 and were blacklisted in Malaysia.

In light of the increasing danger of foreign terrorists, including those driven out of Iraq and Syria, seeking to infiltrate the country, the Malaysian police have already heightened alert, the broadcaster added.
