'Long-standing grudge’: Japan man arrested after strangling 73-year-old resident

Police in Japan have arrested a man on suspicion of murder after he allegedly strangled a 73-year-old resident to death at a facility for people with mental disabilities, media reports said.

The suspect, Terufumi Hayakawa, is accused of strangling Ikuo Akune shortly before 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Japan Today reported, citing police.

According to police, the facility's manager contacted emergency services after receiving information from another person about a dispute between residents.

Hayakawa has reportedly admitted to the allegation, telling police that he had held a "long-standing grudge for many years" against Akune, the news portal reported.

Police said Hayakawa was also suffering from a head injury. A blood-stained blunt object was reportedly found in his room.

Violent crimes are relatively rare in Japan. However, the country has witnessed several isolated incidents of stabbings and other violent attacks in recent years.
