Moscow/Xinhua: Former defense minister and the last marshal of the Soviet Union, Dmitry Yazov, died at the age of 95 from a "serious and prolonged illness," the Russian Defense Ministry said Tuesday.

The ministry's Zvezda broadcasting service recalled that Yazov was assigned the rank of lieutenant and appointed as a commander of a small platoon in 1942.

During the confrontation of the United States and the Soviet Union in October 1962, known as the Cuban Missile Crisis, he was in charge of transferring a motorized rifle regiment to Cuba.

After returning to the Soviet Union, he commanded the Far Eastern Military District. From 1987 to 1991, Yazov served as defense minister of the Soviet Union.

Yazov was the last military leader to be given the country's highest rank of Marshal in the Soviet Union.

In early February, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu awarded Yazov the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland", and the Jubilee Medal "75 Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945."
