H-1B visa holders underpaid, vulnerable to abuse, claims a think- tank in its report

In a report, titled Reforming US’ High-Skilled Guestworker Program, the South Asia Center of the Atlantic Council said it has explored the current flaws of the H-1B visa system and discuss potential policy measures for reform.

The report has been made by  Ron Hira, Associate Professor at Howard University, and Dr. Bharath Gopalaswamy, Director of the Atlantic Council’s South Asia Center.

"The H-1B visa program is one of more than twenty US guest worker programs, but it has arguably been in the spotlight more than any other. While the H1-B was originally intended to attract foreign workers to satisfy unmet demand for skilled labor, the current system undercuts opportunities for US workers and enables the exploitation of H-1B workers, many of whom who are underpaid, vulnerable to abuse, and frequently placed in poor working conditions," the report said.

"Adopting safeguards to ensure H-1B workers are provided fair working conditions and given greater employment rights would both improve the lives of visa holders and better protect US workers," it demanded.

In a major announcement, US President Donald Trump last week said he will soon coming out with reforms which will give H-1B visa holders certainty to stay in America.

" H1-B holders in the United States can rest assured that changes are soon coming which will bring both simplicity and certainty to your stay, including a potential path to citizenship. We want to encourage talented and highly skilled people to pursue career options in the U.S," Trump tweeted.
