Colombo:  Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa may return to the country from Singapore, media reports said.

Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will return to the country from Singapore, Cabinet spokesman Bandula Gunewardena told Daily Mirror.

Singapore has granted a 14-day short-term visit pass to former president as he entered the country on a private visit on July 14, according to immigration authorities in Singapore, the newspaper reported.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled Sri Lanka earlier this month amid widespread protests across the nation over the issue of economic crisis.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa left Sri Lanka on July 13 for Maldives and then reached Singapore.

He submitted his resignation after arriving in the country.

The Sri Lankan Cabinet accepted his resignation on July 15.

Sri Lankans blame his administration for the economic crisis the nation is facing.
