Former Bangladesh minister Mohammed Nasim passes away at 72

Dhaka/UNI: Former Bangladesh health minister and Awami League leader Mohammad Nasim passed away at a Speciality Hospital here on Saturday, He was 72.

His son Tanvir Shakil Joy informed that his father breathed his last around 1110 hrs.

On Friday night, an emergency meeting of a 12-member medical board was held through video conferencing after deterioration was seen in Nasim's health, Nasim’s son was also present at the meeting.

The former minister underwent a successful surgery after his condition deteriorated on June 5 following a stroke while he was undergoing treatment at the hospital.

A day before that, his health condition improved and he was scheduled to be shifted to a room from the ICU.

Nasim had tested positive for coronavirus on June 2. The senior leader was also the convenor of the 14-party ruling alliance which includes several parties apart from the dominant Awami League.

Bangladesh president Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and foreign Affairs Minister Dr Abdul Momen expressed profound shock at his death.

Born on April 2, 1948, Mohammed Nasim served as the Minister of Home Affairs from 1999 to 2001, later he went on to serve as the Minister of Health and Family Welfare from 2014-2019 for the government of Bangladesh.
