Finland’s president to visit Canada as Ottawa pushes deeper Arctic, defence ties

Ottawa: Finnish President Alexander Stubb will visit Ottawa from April 14 to 15 for talks with Prime Minister Mark Carney, marking their first formal bilateral meeting.

The visit comes as Canada seeks to strengthen ties with Nordic partners amid growing geopolitical uncertainty, with discussions set to focus on defence, trade, technology, energy and Arctic cooperation.

Officials said the two leaders will explore expanded collaboration in areas including maritime security, critical minerals, aerospace, artificial intelligence and quantum technologies, as well as satellite and cyber communications in the Arctic.

The trip builds on Carney’s recent engagement with Nordic countries and reflects a broader push by Ottawa to diversify trade partnerships and deepen cooperation with like-minded allies.

Canada and Finland have strengthened relations in recent years, including a 2025 joint statement on foreign and security policy aimed at enhancing strategic coordination. Bilateral merchandise trade between the two countries was valued at C$2.4 billion last year.

Carney said he looked forward to hosting Stubb to advance cooperation and promote “stability, security and prosperity” for both countries.
