Donald Trump vows to impose reciprocal tariffs on India in joint Congress address

President Donald Trump made his first joint address to Congress since taking oath on January 20 when he vowed to impose reciprocal tariffs on countries including India and China on April 2.

"Whatever they tariff us, other countries, we will tariff them," Trump was quoted as saying by the media.

"On average, the European Union, China, Brazil, India and countless other nations charge us tremendously higher tariffs than we charge them. It is very unfair," he said.

"India charges us tariffs, 100 per cent. The system is not fair to the US, it never was," Trump, who recently met Narendra Modi during the Indian Prime Minister's visit to the US, said.

"On April 2, reciprocal tariffs kick in and whatever they tariff us, other countries, we will tariff them," he said.

Promises To Make America Affordable Again

Trump blamed the previous President Joe Biden-led government for the spike in the price of eggs.

He said, "Egg prices are out-of-control and I promise to make America affordable again."

Since assuming office in January, Trump said he has signed nearly 100 executive orders and 400 executive actions.

Gold Card To Reduce US Debt

Trump said his administration is introducing 'Gold card' visa programme, which will help to bring in brilliant, hardworking, job-creating people to the country.

"They're going to pay a lot of money and we're going to reduce our debt with that money," he was quoted as saying by the media in his address.

Last month, Donald Trump announced the introduction of the Gold Card scheme which will provide rich and wealthy immigrants a chance to easily gain American citizenship by paying a fee of USD 5 million.

“We’re going to be selling a gold card,” Trump was quoted as saying by CNN.

“You have a green card. This is a gold card. We’re going to be putting a price on that card of about $5 million and that’s going to give you green card privileges, plus it’s going to be a route to citizenship. And wealthy people will be coming into our country by buying this card," Trump, who returned to power for a second term last year by winning the high-voltage polls, said.

Trump had said the sale of such cards would begin in nearly two weeks.
