Canada Post to end door-to-door delivery for 136,000 addresses in initial rollout

According to a statement, the change is expected to begin in late 2026 and early 2027, marks the initial step in a broader plan to convert roughly four million addresses over five years.

Communities affected in the first phase include parts of Ottawa, Winnipeg, Etobicoke, and regions in Quebec and British Columbia.

The move will replace door-to-door delivery with centralised community mailboxes, which already serve nearly three-quarters of Canadian addresses.

Canada Post said the transition is necessary to adapt to changing delivery patterns and ensure long-term financial sustainability, as traditional mail volumes decline and operational costs rise.

Community mailboxes provide secure compartments for letters and most parcels, with larger or signature-required deliveries redirected to nearby post offices or delivered separately.

The corporation said it will consult with local communities to determine mailbox locations and will notify residents ahead of the transition. Most areas selected for the first phase are adjacent to neighbourhoods that already use centralised delivery.

The shift comes alongside a broader modernisation push that includes reviewing its retail network, where in-person usage has declined sharply in recent years.

Canada Post added that support programs will remain in place for residents with accessibility needs, including accommodations or alternative delivery options where required.

The rollout is expected to expand to additional communities in phases over the coming years.
