Beijing: Beijing, China's capital city, is now witnessing strict measures being implemented by authorities to combat growing COVID-19 cases.

The nation’s political centre suspended many public transport routes and closed subway stations on Wednesday in its drive to curb the spread of Covid-19 and avoid the fate of Shanghai where millions of residents have been under strict lockdown for more than a month, reports South China Morning Post.

The city closed more than 40 subway stations, about 10 per cent of the total, and 158 bus routes on Wednesday, according to operators. Most of the suspended stations and services are in the Chaoyang district, where most infections were found, the newspaper reported.

Chinese authorities earlier implemented strict COVID-19 restrictions in Shanghai city, triggering criticisms from residents.
