Dhaka, Dec 15 (IBNS) Bangladesh government on Tuesday announced it will join Saudi-led initiative to establish a Centre against terrorism and extremism in Riyadh.

"King Salman bin Abdulaziz of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Custodian of the two Holy Mosques has taken an initiative to establish a Centre in Riyadh to coordinate efforts against terrorism and extremism. Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir made a request to the Bangladesh Foreign Minister A. H. Mahmood Ali to join the Centre as its founding member," the Bangladesh government said in a statement.

"In line with the ‘zero tolerance’ policy of the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina against terrorism and violent extremism, Bangladesh decided to join the Centre along with other Muslim countries," it said.

The role of the Centre will be to coordinate efforts, exchange experiences, and provide support where needed.

"It will provide assistance, such as, material support, information, data, etc. to combat terrorism and extremist ideology," read the statement.
