Afghanistan: Eleven Taliban militants, others killed

Kabul/UNI: At least four members of the public uprising forces and 11 Taliban militants have been killed in clashes in northeastern Kapisa province, Mohammad Hussain Sanjini, head of provincial council, said on Monday.

The clashes took place in Tagab district after the Taliban attacked a security checkpoint on Sunday night, manned by public uprising forces.

''Eleven members from the public uprising forces and 18 Taliban militants were also wounded in the attack. The Taliban captured 12 checkpoints after the attack and the clashes were continuing in the area as reports came in, with the Taliban also advancing to the center of the district,'' Sanjini said.

However, the local security officials and the Taliban have not yet commented on the clashes.

New figures by security institutions revealed that 171 personnel of Afghan National Security Forces lost their lives in clashes with the Taliban in a week, despite an unannounced ceasefire between the two sides that is part of the peace efforts by the Afghan government and it's international partners.

The data showed that as many as 222 attacks were carried out by the Taliban during the last week in 29 provinces, injuring 250 people, apart from the security force personnel, Tolo News reported.

Afghan officials said that these attacks threaten to jeopardise the peace process, which has reached an important, yet delicate phase.

''The Taliban's movements and attacks have so far killed and wounded 422 security force members,'' said Tariq Arian, spokesman for the Ministry of Interior Affairs.

In April, the National Security Council (NSC) provided details on Taliban attacks after the peace deal they signed with the US on February 29 in Doha.
