Kabul, Apr 22 (IBNS): At least 130 soldiers were killed and 65 others were injured as militants attacked an army base in Afghanistan's Balkh province, local media reports said on Saturday.

More bodies were recovered this morning, taking the overnight toll from 70 to 130, an official told Pajhwok Afghan News on condition of anonymity.

The attack which started in the afternoon in the town of Mazar-e-Sharif, continued for several hours before the army managed to kill at least 10 militants.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility behind the attack, stating that they had used suicide bombers to carry out the task.

A military spokesperson was quoted as saying in the media that the militants entered the base wearing army uniform.

They initiated the carnage after driving through the military checkpoints.

The Mazar-e-Sharif base is home to 209th Shaheen Corps of the Afghan army, responsible for guarding the northern part of the country.
