Mumbai/IBNS: Actor R. Madhavan has come under fire from a section of social media users after issuing a detailed statement on the ongoing NEET protests, with many questioning what they described as his delayed response to the issue.

Madhavan, who is also the chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), expressed solidarity with protesting students while urging the government to take strict action against those responsible for the alleged examination paper leak.

Madhavan expresses solidarity with students

In a statement shared on social media, the actor wrote: "Education has the power to shape the future of our nation, and every student deserves a system that is fair, transparent, and built on merit. As someone who has always believed in the limitless potential of India's youth, I share the concern and disappointment felt by so many students and parents today."

He added: "An education system must inspire confidence, fairness, and opportunity. Incidents such as examination paper leaks undermine that trust and can deeply affect the hopes, hard work, and dreams of countless young people and their families, especially in a country like India, where education plays such a defining role in shaping lives."

Calling for accountability and reforms, Madhavan said: "I sincerely hope that every individual found responsible is brought to justice swiftly and decisively, and that meaningful reforms are introduced to strengthen the integrity of our examination processes."

Appealing directly to students, he wrote: "To all the students, please don't lose faith. Your talent, resilience and hard work are your greatest strengths. Stay focused on your dreams, remain vigilant against those who may seek to divert the movement from its original purpose, and continue believing in yourselves."

Netizens question actor's delayed response

Soon after the statement was posted, several social media users criticised the actor, alleging that he had spoken out too late despite the protests continuing for weeks.

One user, Kanupriya, commented, "Too late bro too late."

Another user, Hemant, wrote, "Not needed now sir. Thank you for all the memories."

A third user remarked, "Literally playing it so safe. Can't believe I idolized you as a teen."

Another account, The Wander Art, commented, "Maddy on behalf of Modi!"

The reactions reflected criticism from a section of online users, while others welcomed Madhavan's appeal for accountability and support for students.

Earlier, Madhavan had faced backlash from the FTII students who questioned his silence and trolled him with memes.
