‘I felt shattered’: Rasika Dugal recalls Beena Tripathi’s darkest Mirzapur moment
Mumbai/IBNS: For an uninitiated viewer, Rasika Dugal's role in the Mirzapur series might appear less significant when looking at the cast list. However, the perception is starkly different for those familiar with the popular crime thriller.
In the Mirzapur series, Rasika plays Beena Tripathi, wife of Kaleen Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi). Her character is much more than a supporting wife and gradually emerges as one of the franchise's most important and unpredictable power players.
With Mirzapur: The Movie now released, Rasika looked back at some of Beena's qualities that have kept the character pivotal to the series, which has remained a favourite among OTT viewers.
'It was never challenging to understand the emotional core'
Rasika credits the writers for the nuances in Beena's character.
Speaking to NDTV, she said, "For me, it was never challenging to understand the emotional core of Beena Tripathi. It was on paper. The challenging part was to adapt her body language.
"When I first heard the story, my impression was that when Beena enters the room, people should turn around and look at her."
'I felt shattered' after Beena's Season 1 ordeal
Rasika also opened up about the emotional impact of the final scene of Season 1, when Beena locks herself in a room after being raped by her father-in-law at gunpoint.
Reflecting on the scene, Rasika told the broadcaster, "What I really like about the writing is that whenever Beena's agency is taken away, she finds her way to a comeback. It was a moving moment for me when Beena locks the door at the end of season one.
"There was a sense of resignation in doing that. She knew that this day would come one day and she had to go through it. She was raped at gunpoint. I felt shattered to see Beena in a powerless situation. She is always self-assured, in control, but now she's in a powerless situation."
"The truth about women in a patriarchal society is that when a woman owns a place, people don't like it and they try to take her agency," she added.
