Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan was showered with wishes from across the country as he turned 80 Tuesday.

Bachchan surprised his fans, who gathered outside his Mumbai residence Jalsa last night, by stepping outside of home to greet them and thank them for their love and wishes.

The actor was accompanied by his daughter Shweta Bachchan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was one of the firsts to wish the legend, who was last seen in recently released film Goodbye, starring alongside Rashmika Mandanna and Neena Gupta.

The Prime Minister tweeted, "A very happy 80th birthday to Amitabh Bachchan Ji. He is one of India’s most remarkable film personalities who has enthralled and entertained audiences across generations. May he lead a long and healthy life."

Veteran actor Dharmendra Deol, a close friend and Sholay co-star of Bachchan, wrote in the micro-blogging site, "Happy Birthday Amit ."

Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan tweeted, "A very Happy Birthday to an icon whose love and passion towards the fine arts, literature and music has always inspired me no end. Saal Giraah Mubaarak Amitji."

Akshay Kumar said, "Sending my best wishes to the man who’s the one single reason behind an entire generation wanting to be a hero in films. My inspiration, Bachchan Saab ! Wish you a very happy 80th birthday @SrBachchan sir."

Ajay Devgn shared a video with a caption that reads, "Happy 80th birthday @SrBachchan! Wishing you a splendid year ahead Sir. You are actually way ahead of all of us and we’re just striving to live up to the best - YOU."

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar tweeted,"Your passion & unparalleled dedication is an inspiration to everyone @SrBachchan Ji! Wishing you a very happy 80th birthday. May God grace you with the best of health, happiness & long life."

Bollywood superstar Katrina Kaif wrote in her Instagram story, "The Greatest, the best... A forever inspiration."

"To the one and only .. the greatest of all time ... Happy Birthday Amit Ji...," wrote leading Bollywood star Alia Bhatt on Instagram.

But one of the best wishes perhaps came from his granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda, who is an entrepreneur by profession.

Sharing her childhood picture with Big B, Navya wrote on Instagram, "There never has, and never will be anyone like you happy birthday nana."

To celebrate his 80th birthday, the ticket prices of Goodbye have been capped at Rs. 80 by the makers only for this day.

Bachchan, whose next film is Uunchai scheduled for Nov release, is presently hosting the 14th season of massively popular quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati.
