World's most powerful passports revealed: Europe rules, India lags behind
Europe continues to dominate the world's most powerful passports, with nine of the top 10 spots in the fifth edition of the Global Passport Index (GPI) 2026.
Unlike conventional passport rankings that focus mainly on visa-free travel, the Global Passport Index assesses the overall value of a passport by considering factors such as global mobility, investment opportunities and quality of life.
The latest rankings offer a broader picture of how passports can benefit holders—not only for international travel but also for living, working and investing abroad.
More than just visa-free travel
Compiled by Global Citizen Solutions, the Global Passport Index goes beyond simply counting the number of destinations that can be visited without a visa.
Instead, it evaluates passports across multiple parameters, including:
- Global mobility and ease of international travel
- Investment opportunities available to passport holders
- Quality of life and overall attractiveness of the issuing country
- Financial and personal freedom
The result is a more comprehensive measure of a passport's overall global value.
Europe continues to lead
The 2026 rankings underscore Europe's continued dominance, with nine of the world's 10 strongest passports belonging to European nations.
The report reflects the region's strong performance across mobility, economic stability, investment climate and quality of life, helping European countries maintain their lead in the global rankings.
India continues to lag
India's passport remains well behind the global leaders in the latest Global Passport Index.
India ranks 125th among 200 countries in the Global Passport Index 2026.
The development comes even as the Indian passport has also slipped in the latest Henley Passport Index, another widely followed ranking that measures passports primarily on visa-free access.
While the Henley Passport Index focuses almost exclusively on travel freedom, the Global Passport Index provides a broader assessment by incorporating economic, lifestyle and investment-related indicators alongside international mobility.
The latest report suggests that passport strength is increasingly being viewed through a wider lens, with factors beyond visa-free travel playing a growing role in determining global competitiveness.
