Ukraine-Russia war: 2 killed, 6 injured in massive drone attack on Moscow Region

At least two people were killed and six others injured after a suspected massive Ukrainian drone attack targeted the Moscow region on Saturday, according to media reports.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said around 450 drones heading towards the Russian capital had been shot down in what he described as an “unprecedented attack,” the BBC reported.

According to reports, an oil refinery was damaged in the attack, while several houses were set ablaze.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that an oil refinery was among the facilities targeted. In a post on X, he said: “Our long-range responses had a very significant impact in the Moscow region last night. One of Russia’s key oil industry facilities and the aggressor’s logistics facility were hit.”

“These are billions of dollars that sustain the war machine,” Zelenskyy added, listing the weapons systems used in the strikes as FP-1, RZ-100, MICH-2000, Palianytsia, Vendetta, Liutyi, Bars, Flamingo, Sichen and Pelican.

Zelenskyy further said Moscow should “end its brutal war and choose peace instead of building layered rings of air defense at the expense of other regions.”

“Steps toward de-escalation are on the table – in energy and food security. What is needed is political will,” he said, thanking those involved in strengthening Ukraine’s long-range capabilities.

Russia and Ukraine have intensified long-range strikes against each other in recent months amid the ongoing war.

Meanwhile, more than 1,600 Ukrainian drones have been intercepted across Russia’s defensive lines since Saturday, with 450 of them shot down as they approached Moscow, Sobyanin told Sputnik.

“The most massive enemy drone attack has been repelled. Since yesterday, more than 1,600 UAVs have been intercepted across all defensive lines. Of these, 450 were stopped on the approach to Moscow,” Sobyanin said.
