Trump says to meet Putin, Xi at G20 in Japan next month

Washington, May 14 (Sputnik/UNI) US President Donald Trump told reporters on Monday that he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan in June.

"I'll meet with him [Xi] directly. I’ll be meeting with President Xi of China, yes," Trump said.

When asked whether he will meet with Putin, Trump said, "Yes, I will be meeting with President Putin also."

On Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Sputnik that no preparations are underway for a meeting between Putin and Trump.

Also on Monday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told Sputnik the possible meeting between Putin and Trump at the G20 summit could be discussed during the upcoming talks between US State Secretary Mike Pompeo and the Russian leadership.

Putin and Trump held their first summit in Helsinki, Finland, last July where they discussed bilateral relations and an international agenda.

The two leaders planned to meet on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina, late last year, but Trump canceled the meeting in light of the Kerch Strait incident. Trump said a summit with Putin was possible only after Russia released the Ukrainian sailors it detained over violating the Russian maritime border during that incident.

Meanwhile, Putin and Trump held phone talks earlier in May and discussed crafting a new nuclear arms control deal, increasing bilateral trade, denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula. Putin and Trump also addressed the conflicts in Venezuela and Ukraine.
