Islamabad: Armed men attacked Punjab Assembly lawmaker Syeda Maimanat Mohsin, who is also known as Jugnu Mohsin, in Okara region of Pakistan on Sunday, media reports said on Tuesday.

According to the FIR, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, Mohsin was returning from the Jhujh Kalan area in Okara after a rally when armed men waylaid her vehicle and opened fire on it.

The suspects fled from the spot.

Okara District Police Officer (DPO) Faisal Shehzad told Dawn.com that the attack occurred around 30 minutes after she left the venue where the rally was held.

He said that it was a politically motivated incident in which supporters of the MPA were also attacked by their opponent's group.

Federal Minister for Human Rights Dr Shireen Mazari criticised the incident and tweeted: " Shocking and condemnable. Culprits must be caught and dealt with strictly under the law. Absolutely unacceptable. This is terrorism."

Journalist Najam Sethi remarked: " Yesterday Jugnu Mohsin’s opponents in PP184 Okara fired on her cavalcade. Thank Allah she was unharmed. But her application for NOC for Armoured vehicle filed in 2019 was refused recently without assigning reason by Int Min. Who will be responsible if she is hurt.
@ShkhRasheed."

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan condemned the incident and posted: "HRCP strongly condemns the attack on journalist and writer Jugnu Mohsin. We are relieved that she is safe. The perpetrators must be brought to book immediately."

Amnesty International said: "PAKISTAN: The attack on parliamentarian Jugnu Mohsin is a glaring reminder of the need for authorities to act on threats made against women online. A swift, impartial and independent investigation must be immediately conducted to bring those responsible to justice."
