Pakistan dismisses rumours of Imran Khan’s death, says former PM ‘stable’ inside Adiala Jail
Pakistani authorities on Wednesday firmly rejected online rumours claiming that former prime minister Imran Khan had died in custody or been secretly moved out of Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail.
Officials clarified that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder remains inside the prison, is in stable condition, and is receiving full medical care.
“There is no truth to reports about his transfer. He is completely healthy and under proper medical supervision,” Rawalpindi prison officials told Geo News, responding to a wave of speculation that had dominated social media for two days.
The frenzy began after Khan’s sisters — Noreen Niazi, Aleema Khan and Dr. Uzma Khan — alleged they were “brutally assaulted” last week when they attempted to visit him and have been denied access for over three weeks.
Their claims intensified fears about his well-being, which were further stoked by an Afghan news report falsely claiming the 72-year-old had died due to “mistreatment” and that his body had been removed from the facility.
The PTI demanded an immediate transparent update on Khan’s condition and urged authorities to allow family visitation without delay.
Jail officials, however, reiterated that there was “no cause for alarm,” insisting the former PM was receiving routine care and living comfortably within the prison.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif also dismissed the rumours, claiming Khan was being provided “premium facilities” behind bars.
“Look at the food he gets- it’s better than what many five-star hotels serve,” Asif said, noting he had access to a television, exercise equipment, a double bed, and a velvet mattress.
He contrasted this with his own time in jail, recalling cold floors, basic meals, and no hot water.
Imran Khan, who served as Pakistan’s 19th prime minister from 2018 to 2022, has been incarcerated since August 2023.
He faces multiple cases, including corruption and terrorism charges, following his ouster through a no-confidence vote.
