Maldives Vice President Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor detained
Male, Oct 24 (IBNS): The Maldives Police on Saturday arrested the country's Vice President Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor in connection with an explosion aboard a boat carrying the Indian Ocean archipelago's president last month, media reports said.
He was detained as he was returning to Maldives from an official visit to China.
"Maldivian authorities initially said the explosion on Mr. Gayoom’s boat appeared to be an accident, but said subsequent forensic findings pointed to an assassination attempt," The Wall Street Journal reported.
"Maldives Home Minister Umar Naseer said this week that a bomb went off beneath Mr. Gayoom’s preferred seat on the boat. The president was saved because he wasn’t sitting there when it detonated," the journal added.
