Major rejig in Bangladesh Army as Tarique Rahman holds office, defence advisor in India recalled
Dhaka/IBNS: Bangladesh has initiated a far-reaching reshuffle of its senior military leadership, reassigning key operational and intelligence roles days after Tarique Rahman assumed office as Prime Minister.
The changes also extend beyond domestic command structures, affecting Bangladesh’s military representation in India at a sensitive juncture in bilateral defence engagement.
Defence adviser in India recalled
Under orders issued by Army Headquarters on Sunday, Brigadier General Md Hafizur Rahman, currently serving as Bangladesh’s defence adviser in India, has been promoted to the rank of major general and directed to return home.
Upon his return, he will assume charge as General Officer Commanding of the 55th Infantry Division, according to reports by bdnews24.
The recall underscores the scale of the reshuffle, signalling a recalibration of both overseas and domestic military postings under the new political leadership.
New CGS appointed
As part of the reorganisation, Lieutenant General Muhammad Mainur Rahman has been appointed Chief of General Staff (CGS), one of the army’s most critical operational positions.
He previously headed the Army Training and Doctrine Command and replaces Lieutenant General Mizanur Rahman Shamim, who has proceeded on retirement leave.
The CGS post is central to operational planning and coordination, making the appointment a key element of the broader leadership reset.
Intelligence leadership sees major rejig
A significant reshuffle has also been ordered within military intelligence.
Major General–designate Kaiser Rashid Chowdhury will assume charge as Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence.
Currently serving as a brigadier general at Army Headquarters, he replaces Major General Mohammad Jahangir Alam.
Jahangir Alam has been transferred to the foreign ministry for an ambassadorial assignment, reflecting a pattern of senior military officers being redeployed to diplomatic roles.
Armed forces division, field commands reassigned
Lieutenant General Mir Mushfiqur Rahman has been named Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division, following his tenure as General Officer Commanding of the 24th Infantry Division in Chittagong.
His predecessor, Lieutenant General SM Kamrul Hasan, has also been sent to the foreign ministry on an ambassadorial posting.
In parallel, key field commands have been reshuffled.
Major General JM Emdadul Islam has been appointed commandant of the East Bengal Regimental Centre, while Major General Ferdous Hasan Salim takes over as General Officer Commanding of the 24th Infantry Division.
Leadership reset at a pivotal political moment
Taken together, the appointments represent a comprehensive reset of Bangladesh’s operational leadership and intelligence chain of command.
The timing, coming days after a change in political leadership, highlights the close alignment between the new government’s priorities and the reconfiguration of the country’s military hierarchy.
Experts say the reshuffle signals a decisive moment for civil-military coordination in Dhaka as the new administration consolidates authority across key institutions.
