Las Vegas of Asia shuts casinos amid Covid19 outbreak

Macau/UNI: For the first time in more than two years, the world's biggest gambling bub -- Macau -- on Monday shut its casinos.

The non-essential businesses, including over 30 casinos, have been shut for a week.

BBC quoted official figures as stating that the city has recorded 1,526 Covid-19 cases since the middle of June.

About 19,000 people have been put in mandatory quarantine.

Under the earlier guidelines, schools and entertainment venues, including bars and cinemas, had already been closed.

During the weekend, Macau's Government Information Bureau said that all businesses would be suspended unless they were "deemed essential to the community and to the day-to-day lives of the members of the public".

"The latest step is in order to contain the spread of Covid-19 in the community," the Bureau said Saturday.
