Los Angeles, Aug 16 (IBNS): Liu Yifei, the actress starring in Disney's upcoming live-action "Mulan" remake, landed herself in a controversy after she supported the police whom the anti-government protesters in Hong Kong accused of using excessive force to quell the unrest.

"I support the Hong Kong police. You can all attack me now. What a shame for Hong Kong," she posted on Weibo, a Twitter-like Chinese social media platform, reported CNN.

A hashtag #BoycottMulan started trending on Twitter following her post.

Twitter users accused the actress of supporting police brutality, and called out the fact that she's an American citizen, reported CNN.

It has been more than a month since Hong Kong has been witnessing protests over a controversial extradition bill.

The bill would have enabled extraditions to mainland China.

Hong Kong has witnessed anti-government and pro-democracy protests in recent times.

Protests also took place at Hong Kong International Airport which had disrupted flight movement recently.

Meanwhile, reacting to the recent developments in the Hong Kong International Ariport, Cathay Pacific said in a statement: "Cathay Pacific continues to work with the HKIA officials to ensure the return of normal flight operations as swiftly as possible. We firmly believe that social order and stability must be restored in our hub - Hong Kong so that the long-term development and prosperity of the city can again become our priority."
