Dhaka, Aug 16 (IBNS) : A wild elephant that was rescued last week after travelling about 1600 km from India, has died in Bangladesh, media reports said.

The four-ton pachyderm had been swept away in strong river currents of the Brahmaputra during floods in north-east India before being found in neighbouring Bangladesh.

According to reports, the local  wildlife officials in Jamalpur district in northern Bangladesh tried to  move it to a safari park outside Dhaka for rehabilitation.

But the elephant was weakened by its journey and repeated attempts to tranquilise it.

A post-mortem examination has been ordered.
