Islamabad: Pakistan plunged into darkness after a major power breakdown occurred in the country.

The blackout occurred minutes before midnight across the country, with citizens taking to social media to report outages. As outages hit major cities, mobile and internet services were also affected, reports Geo News.

Power outage has been reported from different parts of the country like Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Multan, Quetta, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Muzaffargarh, Narowal, Bhakkar, Kabirwala, Khanewal, Bahawalpur and Sukkur.

Furthermore, according to Geo News' Nadeem Kausar, 29 districts of Balochistan were without power.

Mobile and internet services in the country have been badly disturbed due to the power failure.

A 500kVA transmission line has tripped, reported Geo News, adding that Jhelum, Tarbela and Mangla power plants are shut.

Minister for Power Omar Ayub on Sunday said the restoration process is currently going on.

The energy minister was quoted as saying by Geo News that 500kv and 220 kv grid stations have been restored across the country and power supply has resumed in Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur, Dharki, Guddu, Rohri, Shikarpur, Dera Murad Jamali, Sivi, Quetta, Peshawar, Islamabad, Jhelum, Lahore, Multan, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Sargodha.

"Teams are busy restoring electricity for other cities," he added.

According to Geo News, power has also been restored in some parts of Gulistan-e-Johar, North Nazimabad, New Karachi, Saddar, Bahadurabad, Naya Nazimabad, SITE, Korangi, Manghopir, and near the airport.
