Amid spike in anti-Semitic attacks, Jews advised against donning kippah in parts of Germany

Berlin, May 26 (UNI): The German government's anti-Semitism commissioner has warned Jewish people not to wear 'kippahs', the traditional Jewish skullcaps, in parts of the country, amid uptick in anti-Semitic attacks, media reports said on Sunday.

“I cannot advise Jews to wear the kippahs everywhere all the time in Germany,” said Felix Klein.

The anti-Semitism commissioner also added: "I cannot recommend to Jews that they wear the skullcap at all times everywhere in Germany,” according to New York Post's report.

Government statistics released earlier this month showed that the number of antisemitic and anti-foreigner incidents rose in Germany last year, despite an overall drop in politically motivated crimes.

The number of attacks against Jews rose by 10 per cent to 1,646 in 2018, and the number of reported violent attacks against Jews also rose from 37 to 62.
