Afghanistan votes to elect new president
Kabul, Apr 5 (IBNS): Defying Taliban threats , more than seven million voters exercised their franchise in the presidential and provincial polls in Afghanistan on Saturday, country's Independent Election Commission (IEC) said.
Polling started at 7 a.m. and closed at 5 p.m.
IEC Chairman Mohammad Yousaf Nuristani was quoted as saying by the Pajhwok Afghan News (PAN) that until 5pm, when the voting process closed, over 7 million had cast their ballots.
He appreciated high voter turnout despite rainy weather and insurgent threats of attacks on Saturday.
The polling was largely peaceful in the country despite reports of ballot paper shortages and sporadic violence from across the Asian nation.
Polling time was extended by an hour by authorities to help people exercise their franchise in the landmark polls.
