Kabul, July 30 (IBNS): Afghanistan on Saturday formally became the 164th member of the World Trade Organization, which will now enable the country to enjoy multilateral trade, reports said.

State Department spokesperson John Kirby was quoted as saying in the media, "We welcome Afghanistan today as the 164th member of the World Trade Organization, or WTO. Afghanistan will enjoy new opportunities now for multilateral trade and expand its potential for future development and prosperity."

"We applaud Afghanistan for the years of effort required to meet this milestone achievement and we look forward to working together with that country as a full member of the WTO going forward," Kirby added.

The South Asian nation had gained accession to WTO in December last year, during the Ministerial Conference.
