23-year-old shoots three individuals at Maryland machine plant

Washington/UNI: Three people were killed and three others injured in a shooting at a machine plant in Smithsburg, US state of Maryland.

The shooting took place just after 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at Columbia Machine in Smithsburg, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled the area but was quickly found by local police. He exchanged gunfire with a trooper. A semiautomatic handgun was also recovered from the suspect's vehicle, reports CBS News.

The gunman — identified by Mullendore as a 23-year-old Hispanic man from West Virginia, and a current employee of Columbia Machine Inc — is in custody at the hospital, where he is still being treated.

Charges against him are still pending and a motive has not yet been determined.

Three people killed in the shooting were identified as: Charles Edward Minnick Jr. (31), Joshua Robert Wallace (30) and Mark Alan Frey (50).

Smithsburg is about 110 kilometers northwest of Washington, D.C.
