Mohammed Siraj picked up five wickets and the young team put up a strong show to beat England by six runs in the fifth Test match of the series to level it 2-2 on Monday.

Siraj bowled out Gus Atkinson (17), who was trying to spoil India's party by playing a valiant knock against the visitors.

Falling short by six runs, England were bowled out for 367 runs.

With Atkinson's wicket thrown apart, Siraj jumped in the air in joy to join skipper Shubman Gill and other teammates in the celebration.

After losing the third Test to go 2-1 down in the series, India bounced back strongly by drawing the fourth Test and then going forward to beat the hosts in the final match.

This was the first Test series India played since Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and R Ashwin hung up the boots.

One of the key moments of the day was when the injured  Chris Woakes (0*) came out to the ground to bat after England lost their ninth wicket.

The day's proceedings opened with the match evenly balanced, with England needing 35 runs to win the series.

Indian bowlers had to pick up four English wickets to level the series.

Apart from Siraj, Prasidh Krishna destroyed the opponents by scalping four wickets.

England scored 339-6 at stumps on Sunday, falling short of 35 runs from the target of 374.

World No. 1 Test batter Harry Brook (111 off 98 balls) and veteran Joe Root (105 off 152 balls) anchored England's run-chase taking away the match from India's grip.

However, Root's dismissal before the rain ruined the last hour's play, brought India back into the game.

Indian bowlers used the conditions well and put up a disciplined show to end England's chance of winning the series and established Gill's prominence as a responsible skipper who led the team for the first time since Sharma's exit.
