London, Nov 19 (IBNS): English singer and songwriter Zayn Malik, who has apparently left the religion Islam, said he is "not professed to be a Muslim".

In a recent interview with Vogue, the pop icon born to a British Pakistani father and an English mother of Irish descent, said he won't call himself a Muslim now.

He told Vogue, "To be honest, I’ve never spoken publicly about what my religious beliefs are. I’m not professed to be a Muslim."

When asked whether he would call himself a Muslim, Malik said: "No, I wouldn’t."

"I believe whatever people’s religious beliefs are is between them and whoever or whatever they’re practising. For me, I have a spiritual belief of there is a god. Do I believe there’s a hell? No."

The One Direction star also illustrated in the course of the interview how Malik's family had no issue with the singer's dropping of the religion. He said leaving Islam was easy for him.

Zayn said: "With my mum and dad, they were always there to educate us – I did go to mosque, I did study Islam – but they gave us the option so you could choose for yourself."

"There’s definitely beautiful parts to every religion," said Malik who is pleased to have built his career around the tenets of Islam.

Zayn Malik is the recipient of several accolades, including an American Music Award, Billboard Music Award and MTV Video Music Award.

Adopting a more alternative R&B music style with his debut studio album Mind of Mine (2016) and its lead single, "Pillowtalk", Malik became the first British male artist to debut at number one in both the UK and US with a debut single and debut album.
