Mumbai, Sept 24 (IBNS): Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap on Sunday came out in defence of Newton, India’s official entry for the Best Foreign language category at the Oscars, amidst claims that the movie is inspired by a 2001 Iranian movie titled 'Secret Ballot'.

"'Newton' is as much a copy of "Secret Ballot" as The Avengers is of Watan Ke Rakhwale," Kashyap tweeted.

"Newton is an award winner from Berlin Fest and I can promise you those curators watch more films in a year than rest of us do in a lifetime," he said.

India's official entry to the Oscar-Newton- made a strong impact at the Box Office on Saturday with the movie earning Rs. 3.48 crores on two days.

"#Newton shows REMARKABLE 162.5% GROWTH on Sat... Fri 96 lakhs, Sat 2.52 cr. Total: ₹ 3.48 cr. India biz," film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted.

Directed by Amit Masurkar, Newton stars Rajkummar Rao as the titular character, alongside Anjali Patil, Pankaj Tripathi and Raghubir Yadav.

The movie has received positive reviews from critics and audience alike.

The movie earned Rs. 96 lakhs on Friday.
