Actress and human rights campaigner Sheena Chohan awarded at global peace and unity summit
Mumbai: Sheena Chohan, an actress who played the lead in several film, has been honoured with the “Excellence In Leadership Award” for her human rights work.
The Global Summit on Spirituality for Unity, Peace and Prosperity which instituted the award was organized by Brahma Kumaris World Headquarters organisation and hosted by Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwarya Vishwa Vidyalaya.
Sheena was launched starring alongside South megastar Mammootty after she won Miss Kolkatta and a title in Miss Universe India. After that she did two films with Bengali arthouse filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta and was nominated as Best Actress at the Shanghai and Dubai Film Festivals for her role in Ant Story, directed by Mostofa Farooki and picked up by Netflix.
Sheena used her platform as an actress to campaign for human rights, becoming South Asia Ambassador for Youth for Human Rights, the world’s largest human rights education program.
Sheena was awarded the Human Rights Hero Award at the United Nations, becoming the first Indian to receive the award, and it was for this that The Global Summit gave her the Excellent in Leadership Award. Other people to receive the award this year included Padma Shri winner Dr. Rani Bang and acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal.
“Sheena has empowered children and women with her courage and dynamism and continued efforts and contribution in working for women’s rights issues especially in South East Asia. We recognize your efforts as the Pioneer of Social Change, as a Great Community Leader and a Human Rights Champion,” according to a statement by Brahma Kumaris World Headquarters, Rajasthan.
Sheena has been Ambassador for Youth for Human Rights for over a decade and used her platforms with 20 million viewers a day to communicate the message of human rights to 36 million people in one month. This excellent work resulted in Sheena receiving the Hero Award at the United Nations in New York where she used the stage to call for mandatory human rights education in South Asia, which lead to the Excellence in Leadership Award.
When receiving the Leadership in Excellence Award at the Global Summit, Sheena told the story of her own experience of human rights violations –as a child seeing how her own mother was denied her right to work inspired Sheena to fight for rights, especially the rights of women.
