Voting for by-elections underway in six states, one union territory

New Delhi, Nov 19 (IBNS) : Voting for by-elections is underway in six states and one union territory amid t extraordinary situation all over the country following the ban on 500 and 1000 rupee notes.

In West Bengal, by-elections are  being held in Monteswar assembly segment along with the parliamentary seats of Coochbehar and Tamluk.

In Tamil Nadu, voting is being held in the assembly segments of Thiruparankundram, Thanjavur and Aravakurichi with the ruling AIADMK and opposition DMK being the main contenders.

Polling in Thanjavur and Aravakurichi was not conducted during the assembly elections in April-May, due to the alleged distribution of cash and liquor by both the parties. Both the parties have retained their candidates in the two seats.

In Arunachal Pradesh, the assembly segment of Hayuliang is being contested.  Desingu Pul, wife of former chief minister Kalikho Pul, is contesting on the BJP ticket.

Kalikho Pul committed suicide in August.

In Madhya Pradesh, by-elections are  being held in the  Nepanagar assembly constituency along with the  parliamentary constituency of Shahdol.

Tripura is witnessing by-polls for the assembly seats of Barjala and Khowai while in Assam people are voting in the assembly segment of  Baithalangso and the parliamentary constituency of Lakhimpur.

In Puducherry, polling is going on for the by-election for  the Nellithope assembly seat for which Chief Minister V Narayanasamy is contesting.

Narayanasamy had not contested the elections in April 2016. He was selected as the chief ministerial candidate after Congress won a majority in the elections.
