Vijay takes oath as Tamil Nadu CM, ends six-decade DMK-AIADMK era
TVK chief C. Joseph Vijay has taken the oath as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, ushering in a historic political shift in the state.
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was present at the oath ceremony.
Vijay’s swearing-in marks the first non-Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), non-All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) government in nearly six decades.
Five days of talks to reach the majority
The 51-year-old actor-turned-politician took five days, four meetings with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, and prolonged negotiations with allies to cross the majority mark of 118 in the 234-member Assembly.
His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), won 108 seats in last month’s election.
Alliance numbers secure power
Vijay staked claim to form the government with support from:
Indian National Congress – 5 MLAs
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi – 2 MLAs
Communist Party of India – 2 MLAs
Communist Party of India (Marxist) – 2 MLAs
Indian Union Muslim League – 2 MLAs
Since Vijay was elected from two constituencies and must vacate one seat, the alliance's strength currently stands at 120 MLAs.
Vijay’s rise caps a dramatic transition from cinema superstar to chief minister, breaking the long-standing two-party dominance that shaped Tamil Nadu politics for generations.
