Tragedy in Telangana: 5-day-old infant dies after fire breaks out at Telangana hospital
A five-day-old girl died after a fire broke out at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Adilabad, Telangana, on Monday.
According to reports, the fire is suspected to have been caused by an explosion in an air-conditioning unit at around 11.40 am.
The blaze quickly filled the ward with thick smoke, prompting hospital staff and fire personnel to evacuate the infants.
Quoting Adilabad District Collector Rajarshi Shah, India Today reported that 24 babies were present in the NICU when the fire broke out. The infants were evacuated and shifted to different hospitals for safety and treatment.
Three security personnel are also reportedly undergoing treatment.
Firefighters rushed to the hospital and brought the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the facility.
“This is a very unfortunate incident. A detailed enquiry will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the fire and identify any lapses, if any,” Shah was quoted as saying by India Today.
The incident comes shortly after at least three infants died in a massive fire that broke out at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the District Women’s Hospital in Amravati, Maharashtra.
