Senior Congress leader Shivajirao Giridhar Patil passes away

New Delhi, July 22 (IBNS): Senior Congress leader Shivajirao Giridhar Patil passed away on Saturday.

He was 92.

He was the father of late Bollywood actress Smita Patil.

The Congress party mourned the death of the leader and tweeted: "Our condolences to the family of Shri Shivajirao Girdhar Patil, on his passing away."

Indian Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu also condoled the passing away of the senior leader as he posted: "Sad #Shivajirao Giridhar Patil,ExMP,veteran cooperator,passed away.His deep knowledge of socio,economic issues will always be remembered."

Post-independence, Patil had been associated with various political parties and has been member of Maharashtra Legislative Council, Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and later also of the Rajya Sabha for one term.

In 2013, he was presented with Padma Bhushan; India's third highest civilian award.

He was also a freedom fighter and took part in India's independence movement.
