Radhika Menon creates record by winning exceptional bravery at sea award

New Delhi, Jul 9 (IBNS): Radhika Menon, first woman to be a captain of Indian merchant navy, created another record as the first woman in the world to receive the Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea from the International Maritime Organisation, the media reported on Saturday.

In 2015, she saved the lives of seven fishermen off the Gopalpur coast of Odisha. The fishermen's boat, which was in the waters near Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, was caught in a storm and drifted away when the boat's engine broke down.

Families of the fishermen had also abandoned all hopes of the men returning home after the severe storm and were preparing for the funeral rites when they were informed that that the men have been rescued, media reported.

Radhika Menon was then heading the oil tanker Sampurna Swarajya of Shipping Corporation of India, when she spotted the fishermen and rescued them.

"Congrats Radhika Menon for becoming the first woman to be honored with the Award for Exceptional Bravery at sea," tweeted Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Union Minister of Food Processing. "She is a true inspiration for all the young women who want to pursue a career in stereotypical male dominated field. I salute the courage and valor shown by Radhika and wish her all the best for her future assignments."
