PM Modi and other BJP leaders pay tribute to Shayama Prasad Mukherjee on his birth anniversary

New Delhi, Jul 6 (IBNS): Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) paid homage to Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on his birth anniversary on Thursday.

Indian politician, barrister and academician, Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (6 July 1901 – 23 June 1953) was a minister in the cabinet of India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

But after his relationship with Nehru soured, Dr Mukherjee quit the Indian National Congress and formed the Bharatiya Jan Sangh, which is said to be the precursor to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"Remembering Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his birth anniversary. His contribution to India & scholarly nature can never be forgotten." tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was born in Calcutta. His father was Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, a judge of the Calcutta High Court and also Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta.

It is said that he became the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta in 1934 at the age of 33, and held the office till 1938.

Tweeted Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa, "Remembering the great Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on his birth anniversary, a true patriot who devoted his life to the nation."

Ananathkumar, Union Cabinet Minister for Chemicals, Fertilizers & Parliamentary Affairs, tweeted, "Looking up to Sri Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on his ideals & values of nationalism. Our pranams to him on his birth anniversary."

"Paying humble tribute to Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the founder of Jan Sangh, an intellectual powerhouse, and a great nationalist, " tweeted Olympian and Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting, Rajyavardhan Rathore.

Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Jual Oram said in his Twitter message, "Tributes to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, who dedicated his life for the unity and integrity of Indian Nation."
