Guwahati, Oct 2 (IBNS) : Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday said that the legislators must be proactive and initiate innovative action for bringing change at the grassroots.

Speaking at the orientation programme of the MLAs in Assam Legislative Assembly Sonowal said that the orientation programme will be able to help the MLAs in capacity building and enable them to come up with solutions to the problems facing their constituencies.

The Assam CM said that the legislators would be able to learn research and strategy designing, making sustainable development plans, media relations etc from the programme.

Reiterating that the digital literacy and adopting technology are key areas for the MLAs to tackle newer challenges of the society, Sonowal said that the people from the constituency these days want to know every activity of the MLA throughout the day and social media plays a big role in that. The representatives must bring transparency in their functioning so that the people’s faith in the system remains intact.

He also said that problems are there in every constituency but the MLAs must perform within those limitations to bring change.

“An MLA’s first responsibility lies with his constituency and he must strive to fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the people who elected him at the first place. The MLA must have thorough knowledge about the topography, population patterns and resources available in his constituency to work effectively,” Sonowal said.

Saying that the MLAs must be mindful about the problems of the constituency Sonowal urged the legislators to visit all villages in their constituency and take up matters of education, healthcare etc on priority basis.

Saying that the government is being judged for every action by the people, Chief Minister said that the honesty and efficiency are must for legislators in carrying out their duties.

In matters of cleanliness the Sonowal urged the MLAs to set examples for others to follow and the message of Swach Bharat must be carried to the remotest of villages.

Minister for Education, Health Himanta Biswa Sarma also urged the legislators to take up matters of immunization of children and ensure regular classes in schools of their constituencies to bring the change people want this government to deliver.

He urged each MLA to adopt a school and hospital of their constituency to make it a model school and hospital.
